L'intervention française au Shaba a été déclenchée le 18 mai 1978 pour faire face à une situation d'urgence imprévue où la population européenne était en train de se faire massacrer à Kolwezi, à 6000 kilomètres de la France. Cet engagement, l'opération Bonite, a été menée par une unité de la Légion étrangère française, le 2e régiment étranger de parachutistes (2e REP), ainsi que par des troupes belges et zaïroises.
Limitée dans le temps et dans l'espace, l'opération aéroportée sur Kolwezi a une dimension médiatique et psychologique particulièrement significative. L'intégralité des droits d'auteur de ce livre est reversée à l'Entraide légionnaire et à l'Entraide parachutiste.
